I am having this issue as well, but was able to track down the recorded audio and import it into FCP

MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2021

Apple M1 Max chip

MacOS Sequoia 15.4.1

Final Cut Pro Version 11.1.1

Steps:

  1. Record Voiceover as you usually would, and it will display a track recording in the timeline. That track will disappear when you click stop.
  2. Navigate in Finder to where the Final Cut Library is set to store media
  3. In the Final Cut Original Media folder you should find an alias to your recording in a folder with today's date.
  4. Right-click this file and choose "Show Original"
  5. The original audio will be stored in /Users/{username}/Library/Containers/com.apple.FinalCut/Data/tmp/TemporaryItems/NSIRD_Final Cut Pro_{unique_identifier}
  6. Copy this file to a desired storage location and import it into your project.
  7. To clean things up, you could also delete the alias and TemporaryItems files after you have a working version of the file imported to FCP

As always, when the application behaves is a weird way, deleting preferences is worth a try.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

I'm using it daily on the latest version and works fine for me.

Are you seeing the audio meter respond to your mic in the VO window?

Usually, if you hit Record, and there's no sound recorded, FCP will auto-delete the file.

My guess is you're not seeing the audio meters respond, meaning your mic is detected, but the Mac is not picking up a signal from it. What mic/interface are you using?

Can you verify in System Settings > Sound > Input, that you are actually A) connected to your audio interface, B) getting a signal from it (again, do audio meters respond properly)?

So you hit the record button, it counts down (3-2-1), beeps, you start to record, you see the playhead moving, you see the new clip being created, you stop recording (click record button, his space bar).

Now, after a few moments, the audio clip is still blank?

When you play back there's no sound?

If you see the audio meters respond, there's something odd going on. I think go into System Settings for macOS > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio > click the + button to add FCP.

Also go to P&S to "Microphone" and add FCP.

Let us know if any of that helps.

Update no change 5-6-2025 "voiceover" still not working. Is this from the last update they did?

I don't think you ever mentioned which version you are running... the current one is 11.1, but most of us have NOT experienced this voiceover problem, so it is far more likely that the problem is specific with your setup, and not a general bug in FCP (or macOS).

In order for us to know more, please start by confirming which version of FCP you are using, and which version of macOS.

Many issues can be caused by other software modifications. Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

Well, this is not a known bug. Which makes it more difficult to troubleshoot. And that we're using something that interfaces with external hardware, well, makes is more difficult.

The last thing I would do is open QuickTime player. Go to File > New Audio Recording.

Click the menu triangle right next to the record button. Make sure your mic is selected.

Hit record, count to 5 out loud, hit record again to stop.

Does THAT record anything?

If not, time for your Mac to be checked out at an Apple retail store.

Then there's Ectra Check...
