Why isn't my paste function working in Pages?

I copy some text from outside Pages with the intention of pasting it into a document I've created in Pages. But when I click on the place where I want to past, it doesn't work. If I finally get it to 'work' and paste it in, it goes to somewhere else in the document other than where I want to paste it! I could spend hours doing this and get nothing accomplished! Very frustrating! Probably no help on this one. T
