I was able to update Safari separately, but the OS update keeps failing. The software downloads, but it fails during the preparation phase and asks me to check my internet connection. My internet is working.

I recommend to do a backup and then try installing it using this link Sonoma 14; this link comes from this Apple Support website: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support and brings you to the Mac App Store page with the macOS Sonoma installer; as soon as you click on get, it will redirect you to the system settings, where it will start downloading. If this don't work, you should try connect a ethernet cable and, if that doesn't work either, you can always try reinstalling macOS (How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support)
Thank-you for your suggestions. As it turns out I was able to switch to my slower 2.4 gig network and try the download again, it took a long time but it worked. Now I have the latest OS that my sludgy old Intel Mac can run.
