How do I upgrade MacBook Pro to macOS 13 for Microsoft Teams compatibility?

I currently use a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) operating with macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 (19H15).

I need to use (download) Microsoft Teams on my Mac but I am getting an error message saying Teams is only supported by macOS 13 or later.

I updated my laptop, but it ended up not turning back on and displayed an error message symbol with the message "support.apple.com/mac/startup".

After some research, my mac does not support the update (macOS Sequoia) and so I went through the steps to remove this update.

Does anyone know if it is possible to update my Mac to macOS 13 so I can download Microsoft Teams? Or do i need to buy a new laptop?

Actually, the instructions make no mention of removing anything

It suggested Reinstalling the Operating System while in Recovery Mode

The other option would to Boot the Computer into Internet Recovery Mode

Option + Command + r

Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac

  • Option-Command-R: Start up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall macOS and upgrade to the latest version of macOS that’s compatible with your Mac.

What did you learn when you used another computer to go to that page? That is a link to this page:

You said you have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). That machines supports Sequoia.

macOS Sequoia is compatible with these computers - Apple Support

According to MacTracker, your Mac can run anything between macOS 10.15..4 (Catalina) and the current version (Sequoia). It is too soon to know if it will be on the compatibility list for Sequoia's successors.

That means that it can run Ventura – or Sonoma – or Sequoia. However, you cannot downgrade macOS in place. When downgrading, you must do a "clean install" onto an erased disk.

To perform a Clean Installation of whatever version of macOS this computer Qualifies to run

Scorched Earth Method

This method will WIPE ALL Data and there is No DATA Recovery - Period.

>> Only works on Intel Based Apple Computer <<

To perform this action will require booting from a Bootable Installer

The Bootable Installer can Only be performed on an Apple Computer

This will have to be performed from a Qualifying Computer to run the version of macOS to be made on the Bootable Installer.

Example : Bootable Installer of Big Sur would have to be done on a computer that Qualifies to run Big Sur.

Notation: If the computer being used to perform this action is Too New or Too Old to qualify to run the version of macOS - this computer can’t be used.

Alternative is, to gain access to a Qualifying Apple Computer from a family member, friend or associate.

Extra Special Notation regarding the Touch ID equipped Apple Computer.

About Startup Security Utility and Must Enable from Recovery Mode the ability to boot from External Drive Before Attempting

Shutdown computer and disconnect all external drive Except the newly created Bootable Installer.

Restart and immediately hold the OPTION key until the Startup Manager appears and choose the USB Drive.

It will present options >> Disk Utilities >> View >> View ALL attached Drives.

Choose the Upper Most Drive ( not the volumes indented and list below ).

The drive normally is called Apple Media or Apple SSD - that is the drive to Erase and format as APFS with the GUID Partition Map. This applies to macOS 10.14 Mojave and above.

Formatting for macOS 10.13 High Sierra and below requires HFS Journaled with the GUID Partition Map

Once that is done >> backup out of Disk Utilities and choose install macOS.

Follow the prompts and it may automatically reboot several time.

Upon a final reboot - Setup Assist will present with the newer version of macOS.

I’ve followed those steps. It involves removing the update to Sequoia. That’s why I am posting the question as anytime I update my Mac I receive that error message.

So it seems as if I cannot update my Mac to a new macOS system. From what I’ve seen my Mac is supposed to support Sequoia. Unless there may be something else causing this error?

UPDATE: Thank you all for your assistance. I was able to run through the update steps and troubleshoot through the "Circle with a line through it". Unlike the previous attempt to update to Sequoia (which produced an error message), my mac successfully restarted with the update.

I am unsure why the original errors were occurring when I first attempted to update. The only difference this time was a different network connection, so maybe that was the reason for the original error.
