incomplete / partial measures

Hi there. How do I put an incomplete / partial measure in the middle of my score? I am entering piano notes for a Bach piece in cut (2/2) time. At the start of the song there is a measure (pick up) that consists of one quarter note. Then later, just before the repeat there is a measure consisting solely of one dotted quarter note. Thanks in advance for your help.
