Is it a folder, volume, or encrypted DMG/sparsebundle?

Regardless if you don't have the password or the recovery key for the encrypted item, then there is no way to access the encrypted contents. Isn't that what you wanted? If anyone could bypass the password or recovery key to decrypt an item, then it really isn't very secure encryption so why bother encrypting?

Did you leave a copy of that data somewhere else that you can access such as in another folder, or in the cloud, or in a backup?
