Can I downgrade macOS from Sequoia 15.3.2 to Ventura 13 or Sonoma 14 for tax software compatibility?

  1. Is it possible to switch MacOS from Sequoia 15.3.2 to one of these: Ventura 13 or Sonoma 14?
  2. Is one better than another, if so which of the 3 is better?

TurboTax system requirements indicate that it is compatible with Sequoia:

Perhaps something happened to your installation. Have you tried removing TurboTax and reinstalling it?

The issue for most people has been that TurboTax2024 doesn't support Monterey and you can't install it on Monterey. Intuit has been telling people for the past year that the 2024 version would require Ventura, Sonoma or Sequoia.

  1. Not easily. You would need to erase your hard drive entirely, and install Sonoma or Ventura from scratch assuming your Mac is compatible with it. A Mac cannot run a macOS version that is older than the one it came with from factory.
  2. Better is a matter or personal opinion. Sonoma is obviously newer than Ventura. Both are still supported by Apple.
  3. Are you sure the tax software is not compatible with Sequoia? What Tax software is it exactly?

I'm using TurboTax 2024 with Sequoia 15.3.2 with no problem. Well, one problem. If I don't open a form in its own window sometimes it crashes. Therefore, I've learned to Command+S after every entry so that all changes are saved.

This is on a Mac Mini M4.

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

It’s TURBO TAX, which I’ve used for many-many years. I’m extremely frustrated with it because last year I had technical difficulties and had to go through hoops to speak with a technical rep from Turbo Tax and there was some glitch in their software we had to work around. This year I went to purchase the 2024 software to do my return and it states Mac users “must have Ventura or Sonoma”.

I entered my tax info online using Turbo Tax Intuit however after all of the work of entering everything they want to upgrade me to Premier (which is fine) but want me to pay $20 more than Amazon. They lock you in a corner and no way to talk to a person. No longer an issue because I just purchased different tax software. Good-bye Turbo Tax.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for responding… I do need Premier because of the type of tax reporting I have to do and have used it for years. Last year was the first time I ran into a glitch so I became quickly afraid to proceed given Amazon’s disclosure online. I posted the screenshot above in previous response.

For years I purchased the drop-in Deluxe CDs from Target, updated and ran TT on my Mac's.

This year I purchased TT directly from Intuit. I really didn't really didn't care much for the on-line version, but it worked fine on my Mac running Sequoia.

My only complain, is that they charged me a separate price for Fed. & State, which was more than I used to pay for the Deluxe Fed. & State drip-in version.

thanks,

I have always purchased my TurboTax programs either disks or downloads. I didn’t purchase it this time worried about the Amazon site information about having to have either Ventura or Sonoma. Given I had glitch problems last year, I assumed this was a bug of some sort that they didn’t get rid of.

In any case, it’s hard when one site says one thing and another says something else. At least my taxes are done and submitted albeit via HRBlock this time. I had zero problems with their download.
