My old laptop won't show up as a drive when I connect it to my new laptop

My old laptop won't show up as a drive when I connect it to my new laptop even though I hold the T key down while I boot uo my old latop top. My old lap top cannot be updated. I'm just going to return this laptop and but a dell.

However, this laptop will not read this external hard drive. I have attempted a restart, checked the USB cords and ports and the disc utility for the external drive. It is not recognised anywhere. However, when it has been checked on an older MacBook Pro that is ready to be updated to the IOS 13.1 (this has not occurred), the Toshiba Canvio Ready 2TB external hard drive is recognised. It also is recognised on a HP MV X360. Do I need to purchase a different type of external hard drive for my 2023 MacBook Air M2 with the latest software update IOS 13.1? If so, can I have some suggestions.

Old drive OS can’t be read on new computer. My 2010 iMac capped out at High Sierra and eventually became unmountable. Got newer iMac today with Big Sur. Got a docking station to use old SATA 3.5 drive from the old iMac as external drive to transfer old data to new comp, however starting comp and holding Option to list both drives results in a circle icon with diagonal slash when opening the old drive which means the Big Sur OS is not capable of working with the High Sierra? Does this make sense? Results from a search- “If your Mac starts up to a circle with a line through it A circle with a line through it means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a macOS that your Mac can use. A prohibitory symbol, which looks like a circle with a line or slash through it, means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a version or build of macOS that your Mac can use.” How can I move the old data to the new comp?
