My old laptop won't show up as a drive when I connect it to my new laptop

My old laptop won't show up as a drive when I connect it to my new laptop even though I hold the T key down while I boot uo my old latop top. My old lap top cannot be updated. Why does apple screw me every time I want to update. I'm just going to return this laptop and but a dell.
