Apple doesn’t officially promote this because AirPods are designed to work as a pair. But if you’ve done it once, you know it’s possible. It's a bit tricky, but it can be done manually.

  1. Put both AirPods in the case.
  2. Close the lid, wait a few seconds, then open it.
  3. Take out just one AirPod.
  4. Leave the other one in the case and leave the lid open.

On your iPad

  1. Go to Bluetooth settings.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is on, then pair the AirPod like you normally would.
  3. Once it connects, pop the AirPod in your ear to confirm it’s working.
  4. Now take the other AirPod out of the case.

On your iPhone

  1. Go to Bluetooth settings. You might need to "forget" the AirPods first if they’re still paired as a set.
  2. With the second AirPod out of the case and near the iPhone, press and hold the button on the back of the case until the white light flashes.
  3. Pair this single AirPod with your iPhone.

Important Notes

  • You may have to forget the AirPods on both devices before trying this, as they tend to default to working as a stereo pair.
  • This doesn't always work reliably—the AirPods will usually try to reconnect as a pair again once both are nearby.
  • Once separated, they’ll each function as a mono earbud. You won’t get stereo audio, but you can listen or take calls independently.
