iCloud Passwords app crashes on Windows 11

Since 2024, iCloud Passwords app crashes on Windows 11.

Passwords can still be accessed via Edge/Chrome extensions autocomplete feature, but opening the app crashes after a few seconds.

After turning off and on Passwords and Keychain syncing from iCloud, I can open iCloud Passwords app and scroll through passwords, but the app crashes after 15 seconds.

In Windows Event Viewer, the following error is logged:

Faulting application name: iCloudPasswords.exe, version: 286.0.0.8, time stamp: 0x671ef1a9

I tried the same thing. It didn’t work. Deleted all shared groups, signed out of iCloud on my win 11 pc, signed back in. The passwords start loading but after maybe 1-2 minutes of it syncing passwords it will crash with the same objc.dll exception.

I found out the cause of my problem. It was due to a group of shared passwords. I removed the member the group was shared with, and moved entries to a new group, not shared yet. I am now able to open the iCloud passwords app in my W11 computer. I didn’t try to reshare the password group yet. It’s just sad the app was not able to provide error information before crashing. Poor error management. Hope this can help others with same problem.

I have attempted the following troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists:

  • Deleted all shared groups.
  • Confirmed "page.link" is not present in my keychain.
  • Logged out from iCloud.
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the iCloud application.
  • Confirmed no third-party antivirus software is installed on my PC.

Okay, after spending the entire day today, I think I finally stumbled upon it where I could make it repeatable. Hopefully this helps someone else as well.

I removed all the passkeys, authentication codes first from my account (only had 8 or so of them, had to remove them individually from the associated web sites, not a huge deal). Opened up the iCloud app, crash.

Signed out of icloud and signed back in, it will start to load passwords for about 30-40 seconds and then crash. but it was crashing differently, it was allowing me to send a debug report to microsoft (instead of the typical objc.dll fail)

Next I exported all of my passwords to a CSV file (can only do this from a mac computer)

I deleted all my passwords from the mac computer (select all, delete) - this might be able to be done from an iOS device as well.

Windows PC Passwords app started working right away, there were only a couple passwords in it.

From there I went to the "recently deleted" tab on the windows machine and restored passwords one by one (I took the opportunity to get rid of old accounts that I don't use anymore)

I finally came across a "page.link" password, I remember a few web sites or some apps asking me to save to this in the past, but I figured I'd restore it "just in case". The app instantly crashed and wouldn't reopen. (same problem as before)

From my iOS device, I deleted the page.link password, then from the Windows PC, I signed out and re-signed back in to iCloud, and after a short time it all came back to where it was.

Out of the almost 200 passwords I recovered, this was the only one that did this behaviour, so I anticipate some other people are likely in the same boat.

Hope this helps you!

Apple, I hope you see this and are able to patch this issue. I have had a ticket open for the past 6 months to try to resolve this with apple.
