Why is my MacBook Pro trackpad clicking on its own?

I have a Mac Book Pro 2022. In the last couple of weeks, when I run my finger over the trackpad, without pressing or clicking, it will click randomly itself often 2/3 clicks. I can rest my finger on the trackpad and feel it clicking away to itself. It's causing real problems as it keeps clicking on parts of pages/ things I don't want to open/ use/ buy! It sometimes goes hard and unresponsive intermittently too - so you can't press or click.

It's less than 2 years old and very well looked after. I had my old Mac Book for years with no problems so this is very disappointing. Any advise warmly received.

well if it is a hardware issue take it in

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Outside the USA

Contact Apple Support - Apple Support

you can try making changes to your Settings>Trackpad

if it is glitch—

A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.
