random periods are being inserted in the text
As I type, I occasionally get a period inserted at the end of a word. I am on an M2 MacBook Air running Sequoia.

It appears you are running a beta version— NOT supported here in the ASC.
The current stable release of Sequoia including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 15.3.2
