Can’t open excel file that I could open previously

Hi, I’m unable to open a specific excel file. I can open other files, but not one specific file. The error message states that the file format or file extension is not valid, and that I should verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

I keep a current copy of LibreOffice Suite on my Mac for those rare occasions when a Microsoft document gets bent and cannot be opened by Microsoft Excel or Apple's Numbers. I find if I open it in LibreOffice and immediately save it as the corresponding .xlsx spreadsheet, that the previous applications will open it correctly.

Back in ancient times, I was using the Applix Office suite on my Sun Solaris workstation and it couldn't open a customer Word document. I installed StarOffice (LibreOffice's grandparent) and opened and saved the Word document so it could be opened properly in the Applix software.
