Apple Pencil second generation iPad Pro 2024 8gig

I got an Apple Pencil as a gift and it will not work. I put it on the right side of my iPad and it does not connect. I’m not sure what’s up. I did have a non-Apple Pencil connected before and it worked fine. Is that the reason since then this iPad go through AppleCare and I believe I have a new iPad or at least refurbished. Updated from iCloud still won’t connect.
