How do I prevent others from changing the group text message name on my iPhone?

How do I not see the group text message name and picture someone in the group message applied to the group message. I understand how to change the name, I just want to not see or use the name the other person uses. We seem to be in an endless loop. He named the group, I changed it on my phone but that changes it on everyone's phone, then he changed it back......which changed it on everyone's phone. Since I am an iPhone fan I will have to succumb to the name someone else chooses? WHY? Please tell me that is not the case.
