Very large logicpro X files

I have just started using Logic X and my project involved recording 45 minutes of audio with 4 tracks (drums, bass, vocal, guitar). This 45 minutes contains 9 songs of 5 minutes each. The Logic X file for the total 45 minute recording is 1.6Gb. I want to work on each song in a separate file. When I copy the portion of the tracks with each 5 minute song and paste it into another new file, the new file size is also 1.6Gb despite only having 5 minutes of audio. Why is the new file the same size as the original file despite having only 5 minutes of audio as compared to 45 minutes?

Hi there,

45 minutes of audio is quite a lot. You have to understand the recording structure to grasp why the file size is so big.

It is correct that the “region” in your new project is still the same size as the entire audio file. This is because you can still change the length of the region to the entire recording. A region is only a part of an audio file.

You need to create individual audio files first. The most convenient way is to use one of Logic's export functions.

Logic Menu > File > Export > X Tracks as Audio files (you can set the length by a cycle)

Logic Menu > File > Export > X Regions as Audio files (the length is determined by the region length)

These two options don't alter the Main Window in your existing project and give you some convenient naming options.

You could also use

Edit > Convert > Audio Regions to New Audio Files

but this option will change the existing regions into audio files in the existing main window, which can be sometimes pretty handy, but in your case I would take one of the other two options.
