How to recover an edited photo after accidentally removing it from Favorites in Photos app on Mac?

Hi. I spent about a half-hour editing one of my favorite photos in the "Photos" app. Specifically, Photos v. 10.0. Sequoia 15.3.2 on a Macbook Air 2020 M1. This was one of many photos I had selected as "favorite" with a "heart" icon, and it was in the "favorites" file. After making adjustments to tone, sharpness, cropping, etc. I clicked on "Done." And then, for no discernable reason, I clicked on the "heart" icon - inadvertently deselecting it as a "favorite." No problem, I thought - I'll just go back to all photos and find that particular one with the exact date. And there were all the photos I took on that date - including a few of the same subject. But NOT the one I had edited. I searched for another hour - I mean, a really thorough search. GONE. Any ideas?

It's hard for us to know what " I mean, a really thorough search" means without your telling us. For instance, did you look in Utilities>Recently Edited? Recently viewed? Recently Deleted? Hidden? Did you use a Smart Album to search for created date, or other info you know about the picture? Did you sort your Library by Date added as well as using Date Created? Let us know…
