iPhone 15 volume does not go down when it’s ringing and you look at it.

For the last few years with iOS, when your phone is ringing and you pick it up and look at it the ring volume gets lower, but I’ve noticed with my iPhone 15 and iOS version 18.3.1 this doesn’t work anymore. I’ve tried turning the Face ID switch on or off, in settings which doesn’t make any difference And reinstalling iOS. Still doesn’t work properly.

OK, here is an update.

It seems that if your phone is unlocked, not pointed at your face or eyes it will start ringing when somebody calls you at a loud volume.

If you turn the phone towards your face/eyes, the volume will go down.

So the functionality works as expected unless you’re trying to get it work through the lock screen which it used to do.. So it seems that the problem may be in the interface between your eyes, the lock screen and the ringer volume.

I was able to go into my local Apple Store and talk to a genius and he said that it’s not the first time that he’s heard of this issue so makes me feel a little bit better that is not just my phone!

Q1. “As I said in my comment, I’ve tried it both ways on/off neither works.”

A1. I provided that as a reference, just to be certain it had been done correctly.

A2. Report this to Apple:

Even if you spoke with someone at the Apple Store, you should also give feedback on this to Apple. I don’t have this issue. So, the Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported it to Apple?"

So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of you occurrences, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary
