AirPlay 2 connectivity issues after updating to iPadOS 18.3.2—anyone else expriencing this?

I’ve recently encountered issues when connecting to my AirPlay 2 speakers, and I suspect the problem might be related to iPadOS 18.3.2. Has anyone else experienced similar difficulties?

My home audio system consists of multiple active speakers connected via Airport Express 802.11n (Gen 2) routers, creating a multi-room setup. iPads running iPadOS 18.3.2 consistently fail to connect to any of these AirPlay speakers. On the rare occasions when they do connect, the connection drops shortly afterward. In contrast, my older iPad running iPadOS 16.3.1 has no issues at all and streams Spotify via AirPlay 2 reliably.

I’m curious if others are seeing similar problems with this specific iPadOS version. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I might have identified the issue: turning off F-Secure Freedome VPN (version 3.6.1.9287) seems to resolve the AirPlay connectivity problem. Initial testing indicates AirPlay functions correctly with the VPN disabled, suggesting the issue could be related to how this VPN interacts with iPadOS 18.3.2 and AirPlay.

Unless the VPN connection has been explicitly configured for split tunnelling, the VPN will inhibit all access to other devices on your local WiFi network - and services such as AirPlay and AirPrint that rely upon mDNS or other broadcast traffic. With the VPN active, all traffic is directed to the external VPN Server (i.e. the VPN Gateway).

If a VPN profile or VPN App is installed, ensure this is disabled or completely removed from your iPad if you need to access local network resources.
