How do I enable sound notifications for messages on iPhone with Apple Watch?

I am getting mesage notifications on my Apple Watch (with sound) however not getting any sound notifications for messages on my iPhone. I can't figure out how to solve this, I need to get sound on my Phone only or on both. Can anyone help?

That the way it's intended to work.

Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

A workaround is to turn off wrist detection on the watch so that it locks. Once it's locked, you'll hear the notifications on your phone. However, you'll need to unlock the watch every time you want to do anything more than look at the time. You also won't be able to use Apple Pay from the watch.

The Apple Watch has worked this way since the first one. Apple has shown no inclination to change it but, who knows, perhaps if enough people as, someday they will.

As an ex software engineer, I know it shouldn’t be assumed that how one type of user will use the software will be the same for all users.

Obviously, you're not an ex-Apple software engineer. ;-) Apple has a long and very well-known history of giving customers what Apple thinks they should have, not necessarily what customer think they need.

Go to each notification in iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, Notifications. Activate Custom, then turn off notifications. They go to the iphone only. Useful since Whatsapp notifications got broken by the ios18.

Have to do them individually unfortunately

I had already worked out that having the watch locked would make the notification Ping on my phone. This is not a very good solution as it cuts down the usefulness of the Apple Watch, I may as well sell the Apple Watch and get something else. Obviously this is a design flaw created by Apple !!!!😖

It's not a "flaw" in the sense that Apple intended it to work this way. The idea was to offload notifications from your phone to the watch. There are lots of good reasons to do this. It means I don't have to go digging for my phone. I don't have to look at my phone during a meeting or conversation with someone which can be rude. And it's why I bought the watch in the first place. That doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

Unfortunately, some user don’t need this option forced on us, if there was an option to have it ping on both (my preference) I could look at my watch if I wanted to or open the message on my phone so that I could reply to it. Most of the time, I don’t even notice the ping on my watch, having the ping on my phone is more noticeable. Interestingly the message does ping on my iPad mini as well as my watch, so very inconsistent. Note: I am retired so sitting in a meeting doesn’t affect me now, but even when I was working I would prefer my phone to notify me when someone messaged me. I still feel that Apple should allow user to determine how they want their notifications to work. As an ex software engineer, I know it shouldn’t be assumed that how one type of user will use the software will be the same for all users. If there is no legitimate software reason for not allowing this flexibility then it should be programmed in to allow more flexible use of the notification option.
