There are several messaging apps in the App Store. See if any of them will work for you.
Many of the alternate messaging apps require that you and the person you are trying to contact both have the app, like WhatsApp. This means that you would be restricted to only contacting people with the app.
And you were told of options. You need to choose based on what you have downloaded and tried The only apps that will be listed there to change are going to be based on the messaging apps that you have on your device. The list will only populate apps you have installed. If you have not installed any additional apps, they are not going to appear there. My list only shows Messages and Zoom, as I do not have any other 3rd party apps installed. So you would have to determine what apps you wish to try from the App Store and if they meet your needs better than Messages, you should be able to set that as a default.
Careful ... lots of Malware being injected into GITHUB repositories, and having 3rd party apps like WhatsApp. Signal, Telegram has allot of opportunistic bad actors, just seeing a Phish or Whale worthy enough to OSINIT and Spear ..
Try minimise NON apple products, regardless how popular" .. and UPDATE REGULAR your OS as these are 99% often patches to exploits found, reported or discovered... ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR OS AND IOS software ..
the security patches are these days CRITICAL ! ...
Best Wishes
Do some research on these apps on cyberthreat blogs.. you may find some interesting 'PAUSE' for thinking about just installing 3rd party apps these days...
ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR OS AND IOS software ..
