Why is my iPhone telling me to remove and insert my sim card to continue to use iMessage and Facetime?

Is iMessage currently not working? What happens when you do remove and re-install the SIM?

iMessage is working... I don't know what would have happened if I didn't. I took my iPhone to my carrier, they removed and inserted the sim card as I don't have the little clip to do it. They told me it was because of a recent iOS update and that they have had a few people coming in with the same thing. I'm not getting that settings notification now. I'll see what happens.

When a cellular carrier issues an update you can either accept it in settings, or take out the SIM and put it back whilst still turned on. Either way accepts the update.

Without the update some services may have failed.

Don't you mean an actual Apple iOS update and not a carrier update?

No, there's a difference between the carrier update you got and an iOS update.
