Why is iPhone telling me to remove and insert sim card

When a cellular carrier issues an update you can either accept it in settings, or take out the SIM and put it back whilst still turned on. Either way accepts the update.

Without the update some services may have failed.

Don't you mean an actual Apple iOS update and not a carrier update?

No, there's a difference between the carrier update you got and an iOS update.

I used to keep a couple around for just this purpose. Of course, the newer iPhones (in the U.S.) don't have a physical SIM slot so I tossed them.

Is iMessage currently not working? What happens when you do remove and re-install the SIM?
