Deleting files on MacBookpro 2017 ventura 13.7.4
Don't I need to also emty trash when done? So far nothing is in trash and I have deleted tons of photos and contacts.

Do you have iCloud enabled? If so, then most likely you are deleting those items from the cloud....meaning they are being deleted from all of your connected devices that are using iCloud with that AppleID.
