best external drive option (product recommendation)

Hello Mac fans. I am about to purchase a Mac Studio M4 Max 16cpu/40gpu, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD. Of course, I'll need to connect an external drive for the data (so far it is approx 2.7TB in size).

The question is about the correct choice of an external storage system. I am not crazy with r/w speeds, even TB4 specs will do. My main concerns are (#1 to #3 most to less important):

1. Thermals

2. Noise

3. R/W speeds (but not less than 40Gbps)

# option 1: Connect an external USB4/TB4 drive enclosure [fanless design?] and plug in my NVMe M.2 2280 SSD.

# option 2: Buy a dedicated external drive with the same storage capacity.

What would the best option be considering the priorities stated above? Do you have any product recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

The speeds you WANT and the speeds you can get are two different things.

A USB-C connection provides a 10 G bits/sec pathway, not 40. That's a theoretical 1,000 M Bytes/second, but real-world results will be lower.

The only way to get higher maximum TRANSFER speeds is by using Thunderbolt. Practically speaking, that can provide around 2500 M Bytes/sec top speeds.

There are no drives with DIRECT ThunderBolt interfaces, so you WILL be using a ThunderBolt enclosure, you just have to decide how many bays of what type, one or multiple, NVMe or SATA or something else.

Mechanical drives:

The best mechanical rotating magnetic drives can supply a burst of data off the platters at around 150 M Bytes/sec. Then there is dead time while it seeks. That is not slowed down very much by USB-2 interfaces, and not at all by USB-3

there is a big speed void in between.

How fast does your wallet want to go?

Grant, I wrote about USB4, not USB-C specifics. USB4 protocol can provide up to 40Gbps through a USB-C port.

Also, there are TB5 drives (OWC Envoy Ultra is one) that can provide pure TB5 speeds but I don't need such speeds. Apart from various 2K (upgrading to 4K) screen recordings, I also need to have speedy access to large .PSB Photoshop files (6 to 9GB each), so even though I don't need TB5 speeds, I guess I shouldn't go lower than 20Gbps.

yes it CAN, PROVIDED you connect a genuine USB-4 external enclosure and use an appropriate cable.

¿Want to see a cute trick?

On the OWC/MacSales web site showing ALL external drives, just check the checkbox in the sidebar to display ONLY USB-4 devices!

The list goes BLANK.
