updating whatsapp on older IOS
whatsapp is not allowing me to access the app, requiring me to update whatsapp before doing this - unfortunately this is not possible since it requires my phone to have a certain IOS in order to update.

You need a newer device that supports the version of iOS required by the app developer.

Then unfortunately, you will not be able to add WhatsApp until you have a phone that will allow WhatsApp to be installed.
In other words, WhatsApp has decided that they will not allow their app on run on an older iOS version. So, if you want to install WhatsApp, you will need a new phone.
This was a decision made by WhatsApp.......not Apple.
