Can't Download Spotify Due to Parental Controls

My child just turned 12, and I wanted to upgrade them from Spotify Kids to the regular Spotify app. Since the app is rated 12+, I assumed there wouldn’t be any issues. However, when I try to download it on their phone, I get an error saying, "Due to restrictions set for this device, this app cannot be downloaded."


I've double-checked the family settings, ensured the birthday is correct, and looked through various parental controls, but I can’t find what’s blocking it. Does anyone know where I might need to adjust the settings to allow the download?

  1. App Store or Play Store Restrictions – If your child is using an iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Apps and ensure the allowed app age rating includes 12+. On Android, check Google Play > Settings > Family > Parental Controls to see if app downloads are restricted.



  2. Family Link (Android) – If your child’s account is managed through Google’s Family Link, open the Family Link app on your device, select your child’s profile, go to Controls > Content Restrictions, and adjust app download permissions.



  3. Screen Time Settings (iOS) – If Screen Time is enabled, check Settings > Screen Time > App Limits to ensure there aren’t restrictions preventing app downloads.



  4. Managed Apple ID (iOS) – If your child has a Managed Apple ID (typically for school accounts), there may be restrictions set by the school that prevent certain app downloads.



  5. Device-Specific Restrictions – Some devices have additional security settings through carrier parental controls or third-party apps. If none of the above solutions work, check with your mobile carrier or any parental control apps installed on the device.
