Accidentally erased too much i.e the OS

In preparing an older, intel based Mac for contribution, and I accidentally erased too much. I got the " can't connect to recovery volume" response. Question: Is it possible to have the apple Store install a basic OS so that I can give the old computer to a charity or to a school?

  • Option-Command-RStart up from macOS Recovery over the internet. Use this key combination to reinstall macOS and upgrade to the latest version of macOS that’s compatible with your Mac.

Or, the posting regarding a Bootable Installer which could make this reinstallation without the trip to the nearest Apple Store

Potentially, yes. I suggest you give your local Apple Store a call before hand and set up an appointment at its Genius Bar. They should be able to help you out.
