Only ‘Other’ profile shows at login on MacBook

Yesterday I factory restored my MacBook. No problems using it, all went fine. I shut it down when I finished work.

This morning as I turn it on only an ‘Other’ profile shows shows to log in. I can not log in.

So I followed steps in a previous question and went into Terminal to reset the password. And on every volume I click there is no user found.

What do I do?!

The Home Folder May have Hone Missing:

Restore from a Time Machine Backup:

Start by recovering your Mac from a Time Machine Backup, if you have created one. Go Here: Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support

If that is of No Success, then...

Reinstall the macOS:

Go Here: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support. Choose the code for a High Sierra USB Bootable Installer. So, first reinstall it, not erasing your Hard Drive. Nothing would be rid of; it's just that all missing folders and files would be places to where they should be. If that makes no Home folder, then you would have to erase the hard drive. But, reply back before erasing it.

"Yes, thank you this is sadly what I have had to do. Any idea what went wrong to make this happen in the first place?"

You are welcome.

The Issue:

The user's Home folder was not installed. This can occur when there is an issue connecting to Apple's server. So, using Ethernet is best (when an available option), when it comes to installing an update. If you have no ethernet port, then this is what to use: Belkin USB-C to 2.5Gb Ethernet Adapter - Apple

"Okay. Thank you I will give this a try. Unfortunately I have no Time Machine back up. I am running Big Sur, so I will try to restore the OS. From Recovery."

Excellent job troubleshooting! Keep us posted.

Keep a Time Machine Backup:

Take this as a learning experience, knowing to always create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac every-so-often. That way, you can have something to restore it from, should anything go wrong, from here on out.
