Most likely the initial download was corrupted, or unfinished; or the browser served you a different version of the files (webp perhaps?) that is not supported by Quicktime.

Does the file open in the QuickTime Player? If so post a screenshot of what it shows in the expanded information window.
Use Handbrake to convert it. Please report what codec is being used. Handbrake should shoe you.

I assume that means everything is now functioning correctly.
I have had weird effects with browsers . . . usually Safari!
A few months ago I was on the MotionFX website trying to download a free LUT app.
The download button did nothing but take me round in circles. I tried off and on for about a week and then decided to give Brave browser a try.
In seconds I had the downloaded file on my Mac. Safari was still refusing to download it.
Where did these files originally come from?
I downloaded from a stock footage website.
Dialog box says the file "is not compatible with the Quicktime Player"
Yeah, Safari is so not compatible with so many web site. I often switch to FireFox to get web sites to work and download correctly.
