Migration from iMac Monterey 12.7.6 to new Mac Studio M4

OK I waited 10 years for Apple to release a new 27 inch powerful iMac, and I finally gave up. I just bought a new Mac studio M4. I never had a problem before but since there's such a wide gap between my machines and operating systems I was wondering how simple it would be to transfer over all my data from my late 2015 iMac 27" to the new Studio, and if there were any subtleties and or things I should look out for.

Of course I will back up my computer first. I'm sure the new learning curve for the new operating system will be massive, considering I hate the new photos app on my phone! ha

I'm a professional musician and photographer and so this is really important for me, so thanks to everyone in advance for helping me make this transition. I didn't want to wait so long but I just gave up. Also the only upside is if I have a problem with my computer, I can take a little box into the store instead of carrying the screen in! ha

I’m using Mac for about 20 years now. MacBook Pro and then iMac.

I am very satisfied with the brand.

The reason I wanted to warn you is that I’m’ producing travel and architecture videos since a few years now. Since yesterday I was using an iMac 2017 and was very satisfied, but it became to be a bit slow.

so I was waiting for the Mac Studio M4.

I transferred all the data on the new computer and I was confident I will not get bad surprises.

the Mac Studio is very powerful, but when I tested a video recently produced, I had was really badly surprised : the sound is comparable to the one in a smartphone. For production and test of videos, that’s not ideal.

Of course I can use my connected high quality speaker I have in the same room, but this one is connected through airplay. But this means a latency of about one second. For synchronization of image and sound, this is not ideal.

Thing is that I really did not expect this, as the product is called « Mac Studio » which suggest a good sound.

So I will have to find a solution, but I’m limited in room,,,

Wow, what a nightmare. Since my late 2015, I7 iMac did not have a thunderbolt output. I connected it using a USB-A cable to USB-C in the new Mac studio. It said it would take 50 hours to complete so after a couple hours, I canceled the process on both machines and contacted Apple. I had a CAT 8 ethernet cable which I then connected and it said 24 hours to complete so I was gonna just let it run. I got up several times during the night to check the progress and the information on both screens was exactly the same, I slept in thinking it would take a long time. When I finally got up the new Mac said it had completed the migration, but my older iMac said it was only 3/4% complete and needed six more hours.

I really don't know what to do. It looks like all my stuff transferred over, and I have a Time Machine back up from my other Mac in case there's some file that's missing, but boy this was a lot more difficult, frustrating, and more complicated and unsatisfactory than I ever imagined.

I used my TM backup to migrate from my iMac running Monterey to Sequoia. I had no issues and only one app that was not compatible. That one app was easily identified and I removed it to the trash. The only user learning curve is that the user interface menus have all changed but with some use you can learn them.

jmputz,

Thats OK , I am running JBL 12" Studio monitors through a Yamaha stereo power amp! I just needed to upgrade the computer, the one I'm using is 10 years old and quite slow with some of my more complicated projects. It's $7000 with the build I picked so it was not cheap, but I'm hoping it lasts a few years. This is the first iMac I have had that hasn't died on me. I wanted to use it for something else, but I'm probably gonna sell it to one of the online store like sell your mac etc. A lot of guys online hate Max but I grew up on a Mac I use PCs at a job for almost 40 years and they seem like for arts and graphic based projects, it seems more intuitive to me. Like many I have a hate love relationship with Apple but what are you gonna do! ha

Having been ‘Mac’ since the old grey ‘lump’ that was pre-modem, adoration of the development of product has always been upward and impressive. I fear that it has peaked with the less than a month since commissioning the Mac Studio bespoke. The lovely old dinosaur Mac Pro circa 2008 RAMmed upto to max alongside terabytes of storage, happily pottered on with professional chores and Apps, even FCP X but ‘full’ RAM was too frequent. Let’s recall that this Pro had PCIe/ TOSLINK I/O, and many slots for HDD’s and SSDs like mine. Reading up on Studio guided me towards the spec needed for the work needs (Post production Video & etc.) The edit suite being refurbished to accommodate and enhance including the TOSLINK … not only has the fibre feed via analogue 3.5mm been ‘retired’ but the complete Studio is in capable of providing anything above 2 channel audio even via any of the outlets - I thought they were joking when told this, but an external 3rd party device is apparently required to reproduce the audio needs and expectations a £4K + ‘professional’ computer requires … did I miss something ? Of all the Apple products owned and appreciated here, I have never been so crestfallen as I am with this Studio. The most basic of needs seem to have been ‘forgotten’ for the professional freelancers that are heavily investing in their futures only to find that old is better than new in provision (speed etc., acknowledged) Sequoia and I are still trying to come to a level of acceptance too… ! JUST sharing as an `FYI on the tail of the sound matter. And YES, the ‘stereo’ in built speakers are about as ghastly as the mono one housed in the original Tower Pro - some things never change!

I’m hoping I don’t have any problems. I’m kinda old-fashioned and everything I have is hardwired, including my trackball mouse and my keyboard. I’m also going out from my music software (DAW)into a digital audio converter (DAC).

I’m in a pretty big underground van so most of the sophisticated stuff is done in a bigger studio, but I still do small portions of it and also do lots of Photoshop and photography software
