Mac Book Pro Sept 2019 factory reset for a different owner

My son's Mac Book Pro bought in September 2019 that has 2.8GHz quad core 7th Generation intel core i7

16GB 2133 MHz LPDDE3 Memory

256GB SSD

Radeon Pro 555 with 2GB

Shipped with Sierra OS

Can I factory reset and re-install to the latest OS without having first to install Sierra?

Or I will have to install OS in sequence all those OS were released since 2017 to get the latest OS?

(He has bought a new MacBook Air M4 and hence I am to get his old one)

Thank you for your time

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

No, you can't RE-install the latest OS - but I'm puzzled how it came with Sierra? 2019 Macs shipped with Mojave minimum.

However, once you've installed the base OS you don't have to install each OS separately, you can upgrade to the OS you want before parting with it. (If it IS Sierra, you will probably have to upgrade to Catalina and THEN one of the latest, but either you're wrong about the model year, or which OS it shipped with; I suspect perhaps the model year as 7th gen i7's were launched early 2017 and an early 2017 MBP might have shipped with Sierra? ).

So I when do a factory reset it will put OS Sierra.

From the above I understand that then I will have to Install Catalina .

Only after that I could move the latest available and acceptable to my MacBook Pro?

I hear about Sequoia OS released and would the 2017 MacBook Pro suitable for the upgrade?
