Apple Books ‘incorrect format’ error when opening on MacBook Pro

I bought a book through Apple Books with my iPad and am reading it tthere and sometimes on my iPhone. Today I tried opening the book on my Macbook Pro and received the following error response:

"It is formatted incorrectly, or is not a format that Apple Books can open."

I searched for similar problems in the Community and found a possible to go to the Account tab and "authorise this computer".

I did this several times as well as restart the laptop, but all to no avail. The error keeps recurring.

I can continue reading on the iPad, but how do I solve this problem when I want to read on the laptop?
