Why can't I copy and paste files from Mac Studio internal drive to an external HDD with read-only staff permissions?

Hello,

Why can't I copy and paste files from my Mac Studio internal drive to an external HDD why do I have to drag and drop? Why can't I just copy and paste? I hate to drag and drop!!!

Both drives are APFS.

I copy and paste all the time from my Mac Studio 512GB internal to another 2TB external APFS HDD drive all the time with no problems.

The permissions settings on this 2TB external APFS HDD drive is read and write for administrator (aka my name) and read and write for staff and  read only for everyone.

The permissions settings on the 18TB external APFS HDD drive that I can NOT copy and paste to are read and write for administrator (a.k.a. my name) and read only for staff and read only for everyone.

I couldn’t find a paste option anywhere, including by trying a Command-V action.

And when I try to change the staff permissions to read and write like the permission settings are set on the 2TB HDD on this 18 TB drive it tells me I don’t have permission… I’ve tried everything.

I also tried booting to this 18 TB external drive, but it only shows permissions for administrator and wheel and everyone there is no staff permission to change to read and write like on the 2 TB drive settings.

I even tried logging into my other two users on this 18 TB drive and it’s the same as I just mentioned in the previous paragraph.

In users and groups on my Mac, there is one user that is administrator which is my name would adding another user to this help me to do what I’m trying to do?

I’ve spent many days and so much work on this hopefully somebody out there can help me out because I really need it!!!

I hate dragging and dropping!!!

Thank You!!!

Drag and Drop really is the preferred method for moving files. Copying a file reference to the clipboard is mainly intended for manipulating NAMES of items, not the items themselves.

I know Drag-and-Drop is hard with a trackpad, but that is likely because you did not PRE-Open a SECOND Finder Destination window into which to DROP the items. I posted instructions above and now have made an example graphic to go with it:

Open the Source window in Finder.

Choose 'NEW Finder Window' off the Finder's File menu.

'Navigate'-- that is adjust the destination showing in that SECOND window.

Select an item or many items in the SOURCE window.

Drag and Drop to the Destination window, in ONE simple movement and no fiddling or opening things while you are holding files on the pointer.

When I right click on the files I want to copy that part works that appears in the clipboard

but then when I right click on the folder of the external drive to paste it ….there is no paste option visible

and at the top menu there’s nothing visible and command V does not work.

I think it has something to do with permissions. Or possibly the expensive OWC drive dock might have something to do with it

because I have a 2.5” bare drive in there. That is the drive in question Please read my post again.…

because I’ve been working on this for four days now it’s really disrupting my work flow…

I have successfully dragged and dropped, but I hate drag and drop because I always screw things up. Thanks for your help!!!

if you are concerned that this is a Permissions problem, drag and drop one file and see if that goes according to plan.

the easiest way to do this is to open the Source directory, then choose Finder > New Finder Window, and navigate the second window to the Destination. With source and destination in sight, drag and drop one file.

¿Does it go?

-- yes, permissions is not the issue

-- no, permissions may be the issue

Hello,

Thank you, but I don’t understand your probably viable instructions

But before you responded, I wanted to tell you that I have dragged and dropped successfully to this drive many times in my experiments

With multiple files of single files without following your viable instructions because I don’t really understand that technologically… I’ll look closer at it later…

But drag and drop works perfectly, but I hate it, but I can’t paste it from the internal drive to the external drive. There is no paste option. I can only copy.

I finally have this external drive set up. It’s gonna be my storage drive when my 512 gets full.

I need to be able to copy and paste and not just drag and drop because it’s easy for me to make mistakes when dragging and dropping.

Does anybody think it could be the OWC dual drive dock?

Because I am able to copy and paste to all of my other external hard drives

The drive I’m having problems with is a 2.5” inch HDD bare drive in my nice OWC dual drive dock

All of my other external hard drives I can copy and paste to perfectly they are not bare drives like the one I’m having problems with in my nice OWC drive dock.

They are your standard external hard drives encased in a black box from the factory. And I can copy and paste to them perfectly.

But this one bare drive cannot be pasted to only drag and drop works.

It is very very, very important to be able to copy and paste to this external hard drive. I’m going to be using it very extensively in the coming years.

I’ll go take another look at your instructions.

Please read my original posting again if you can.

Thank You!!!

It copies perfectly, and it appears in the clipboard, but there is no paste option anywhere when I try to paste it to the external drive…

By the way, I think I already responded to your posting, but I guess it didn’t get through

I hate drag and drop

thank you

Hello,

I am the original poster of this topic.

The drive dock that this 2.5 inch HDD hard drive is plugged into is a OWC Drive Dock USB-C Dual Drive Bay Solution, USB 3.1 Gen 2, for Mac and PC, (OWCTCDRVDCK)…

 https://a.co/d/hXNFFZv

Is it possible this problem is caused because it’s a bare drive plugged into this particular drive dock?

Because all of my other external drives are not bare drives and I can copy and paste perfectly with them; they are the usual external hard drives encased in a black case at the factory.

Please Help

No, that's not the way it works.

If you want to modify what you said, your additions and edits are treated as an "audit trail" and the lead-in statements and questions and answers are preserved.

Interestingly, this also preserves the thought process that lead to your initial statement, and show the resolution or difference as the discussion unfolds and/or different information becomes available. This often changes what you Would have written, if perfect information were available at the start. This can actually be MORE valuable for Readers facing similar issues later.

Hello,

I’m the original poster. I have a very very critical problem. I’m trying to solve in my post.

I really haven’t gotten the answer here at this community.

Can someone suggest or else I might try posting my question to get the answer.

I’ve already called the drive dock people OWC and they said there should be no reason Why you can’t copy and paste to the drive

Next I’m gonna call Western Digital because I have 2 Western digital gold 18 TB bare 2.5” drives in my drive dock

So maybe they’ll have an answer. I need to be able to copy and paste to my external drive from the internal Mac studio drive.

I can successfully drag and drop, but I hate dragging and dropping. I always make mistakes.

Very, very, very important to me that this gets solved ASAP!!!

Thank you

Hello,

The files that I copied appeared when I click show clipboard in the upper left edit menu… It is the native clipboard on my Mac not an app…

I just need to be able to copy and paste from my Mac Studio internal drive to my 2.5 inch HDD in my OWC drive dock

I hate dragging and dropping because I make mistakes.

This is so critical this has been going on for a month now it’s killing me!!!

I need to be able to copy and paste now!!!

Please help

Thank you

I'm not the OP but I too hate dragging and dropping on Mac because it's so fiddly. If the folder has a mix of folders and files then it's a 50/50 chance that whatever's being dropped will drop into a sub folder rather than the folder. You have to line everything up beforehand and make sure the destination folder is scrolled to just where you want it because scrolling while dragging won't work when you need it to or it will scroll so quickly so as to be useless. The time for folders to open automatically is set randomly and maliciously to be too quick on folders you don't want and too slow on folders you do want. Once the wrong folder is open there's no way to go back to where you want. On more than one occasion I've turned off my Mac with the power button while holding on to a bunch of files to avoid having to drop them in the wrong place. It's awful and I have total sympathy with the OP.

Practice makes perfect.

I've been dragging and dropping for over 25 years without having any issues.

If the wrong folder tries to accept the drop, all you have to do is backup and/or move to the right one.

What I really hate are Magic Mice are Trackpads.

Do you think buying and using a different drive enclosure would fix my copy and paste problem?

Right now I’m using a really nice expensive. OWC dual drive dock for my two 2.5 inch HDD’s

I really need to copy and paste and I need to do it now.

Please help

I'm just curious about the specific difficulty you encounter with the Drag & Drop. I know with the Apple Trackpads with Haptic Feedback, that I cannot do anything correctly as long as the Haptic Feedback setting is enabled. Is this perhaps part of the issue you may be having with the Drag & Drop? Try turning Haptic Feedback off within the Trackpad System Settings to see if this makes any difference for you.

Another thing I do is to disable the Tap to Click feature since there is no adjust available. I get into so much trouble with Tap to Click enabled since it is usually much to sensitive for me.

If the Drag & Drop issue you have is with trying to accurately drop the items at the correct location, then this can indeed be tricky at times especially if you hover the pointer over a folder too long which will open it. The trick is to hover over the white space area between the icons in Icon View, or far enough to the right if using List View (there is a sweet spot where you can hover in List View).

I'm very dangerous with a Trackpad, but I do manage for the most part by customizing those Trackpad settings & learning to hover over the white area sweet spots so folders do not automatically open when hovering too long. You can hover over the back arrow in the Finder to close the automatically opened folder to return to the previous folder as well.

Maybe these things can help you as well.

I don't think the drives are the problem with the Copy & Paste action.
