How to safely use Apple Diagnostics on a refurbished MacBook with migrated data?

The 'new' laptop (2022 M2) was purchased in UK from well known refurbishing company. It worked well for 4 months then black screen occurred on opening lid. I corrected this for use but it continues to happen. The laptop is used every day for relatively minor tasks but holds all my data. We have two users, but I run my partner's account (illness). All data transferred using Migration Assistant only, apart from a couple of photos using Airport Utility. It is still under warranty. I'm instructed to use Apple Diagnostics by the seller but fear for safety of data.

When setting up a new Mac you can either migrate from an old system, or migrate from a Time Machine backup. Both are fine.

My concern is that you may not have any backups at all. If the data on your internal SSD is important (or any data on external data drives or in the cloud), then you need to make sure you have good backups of that data. The more important the data, the more backup copies you should have. FYI, cloud file syncing services are not backups. There are a lot more new ways to permanently lose access to the data stored on the internal SSD of the recent Macs due to all of the hardware, software, and security changes.

Kernel Panics can be caused by hardware or software issues. Most software issues that cause Kernel Panics are from using anti-virus software, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software.....none of which are needed on a Mac. These types of apps usually cause more problems than they solve because they interfere with the normal operation of macOS at a low level. If you have any of these types of apps installed, then uninstall them by following their developer's instructions.

For hardware issues, make sure to disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem. Beyond that, the only way to confirm a hardware issue is if the Apple Diagnostics report a problem or if the failure also occurs with a clean install of macOS which involves erasing the disk & reinstalling macOS and thoroughly testing before installing any third party software and before migrating or restoring from a backup.

You can post several of the Kernel Panic logs so we can review them. These Kernel Panic logs are located in "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports" with file names containing "kernel" and/or "panic". Post them here by using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar.

You can also run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for clues. Just know if any of those apps I previously listed are shown in the report, you will be instructed to fully uninstall them before you will receive any more assistance since they are too often the source of the problem.

thanks, dialabrain - actually my question was about having transferred data from my old laptop to the new one (I asked about advice re: Migration Assistant (which I had used) but had been told by the seller that Time Machine backup would somehow have been used automatically in this process - I've never used Time Machine so was puzzled), not about diagnostics, but I'll keep this in mind.

dialabrain, I forgot to say exactly what I had been told - you may be able to help here: "as you've done a migration using migration assistant, this would have used a Time Machine backup to copy from your old device". My concern was not having intentionally used Time Machine and whether or not this use would cause problems (given recent kernel panic)

Using Apple Diagnostics should not cause any issues with your data. But, and this is a big but, you're working with a flawed machine and therefore there is always a risk of dataloss or corruption. So your first step is to make a back up - or two - of the data on that machine. Then, protected by that, you can do whatever with some comfort from your back ups.

actually no, that was not my question - as you can see, it was altered (including the title - p'raps it was too long?) by the moderator and consequently missed out all reference to the real problem which was about having recently experienced kernel panic on my 'new' laptop and being told by the seller that this may have come from my having transferred in all my data (the new laptop, a refurb, is a 2022 M2 13") - having read other questions about kernel panic I was concerned a) about hardware issues such as display and TCON but also b) that the apparent use of Time Machine whilst I actually only used Migration Assistant would somehow affect my warranty. Apologies if this message has crossed a reply by you.

thanks, Yer_Man - yes, I fear you are correct. As you may be able to see from my most recent post I fear the kernel panic is caused by a flaw such as I've heard about from the community. So yes I shall be making a back-up and then checking out diagnostics. The company that sold me the machine does not cover software issues in their warranty but if hardware issues can be proved I may get help from them. I'm grateful for your reply.

thanks HWTech - I have come across your advice before when reading about kernel panic and will post the logs. This looks like a long haul for me so bear with me - I'll be back as soon as poss. By the way, no anti virus software, cleaning/ optimiser apps or 3rd party security software has been used by me, neither do I use external devices (I'll be backing up to a La Cie rugged USB device shortly).
