Can I install the latest macOS on my old Mac?

can I have the latest version of IOS even if my Mac is old? And how do I do that?

Some people mix iOS for macOS


iOS is for Apple iPhones / iPads


macOS is for Apple Computers


To answer you question regarding upGrading an older computer


Simply put


The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. 


Without an Technical Details regarding you computer


It is impossible to Directly Answer this question


Find out which macOS your Mac is using


Does this computer appear as Listed and qualifying for an upGrade to a newer version of macOS ? 


With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.


Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.


If Yes, suggest having at least 50 GB of Empty Space on the drive.


It will allow the Full Version ( about 12.xx GB ) to download, then expand and then commence to install.


If there is Third Party Security Software installed - remove it.


It will interfere with both the download and installation process.

Your tag line indicates that you are currently running macOS 10.12 (Sierra) on a 13" MacBook Air. No MacBook Air that is old enough to run Sierra Is recent enough to run anything later than Monterey, and many MacBook Airs that run Sierra are not recent enough to update that far.


There have been three versions of macOS since Monterey (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia). Thus, if the information in your tag line is correct, you cannot have the latest version of macOS, or even one of the "most recent three." (Not on that old computer, anyway.)

Note that Catalina and later break 32-bit applications.
