why wont my mac save a document to "desktop icloud" instead of always saving to "pages icloud"?

saved files are not showing up in icloud document folder, MacBook Air 13", Sonoma 14.0 Macbook Air M2, 13", Recently updated to Sonoma 14.0, now, when I download any files, PDF, or otherwise, into the iCloud documents folder, so it can be shared across devices, the recently downloaded file, does not show up in the folder, if I log into the same iCloud documents folder from another device, it's right there. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the iCloud, restarting the computer, and clearing all of the cache from Google Chrome/. This happens across all browsers, and seems to only affect this device with the new updated OS. Any ideas?

How do I stop Pages from creating a new folder in iCloud Drive every time I save or even open a document? I have already saved the document in one of my other folders in iCloud Drive. I don't need two copies of the document, yet every time I go to open my Pages document, I find a new 'Pages' folder has popped up in Finder. Why is it doing this and how do I stop it? Also I'm new to Macs, how do I 'save as' a file like you would on word. There's the dropdown menu at the top from the title of the document, but it gives you limited options as to where to save it. As in, it will just say 'iCloud Drive', so later I have to go and sort the file into the right folder within my drive.

Why did my Documents file disappear from my MacBook Air local drive with last apple update? With last Monterrey 12.7.6 update my local Documents file disappeared. Gone. It and all files were still on iCloud, but nowhere locally. I didn't reconfigure anything. How do I get my Documents file to reside locally on my MacBook Air as well?

Because your System Settings are configured to do so?

Settings -> iCloud -> Saved to iCloud -> See All

Check if Pages is configured to use iCloud. If it is then it will save to iCloud by default. Turn it off to save files locally.
