Apple Home app resets all devices to off upon opening, making it unusable

I am/was an enthusiastic, happy Home app user from the beginning. I use primarily Hue lights, sensors and some other brand devices (Netatmo, Eve, Fibaro,...). All my Apple hard/software(Macs, Ipads, iPhones, Watches, AppleTV+s,...) are up to date.

My problem still is that when I only open the Home app it starts with resetting everything, so all lights/devices switch off, quite annoying. Also the adaptive lighting feature, I tried max to disable it, nevertheless it does everything wrong and works against my goals but I can't control it. My previous question was disabled because of lack of follow up. Vancouver22(thanks) suggested to switch to the Hue app instead of using Home app but I and my family are so used to the Apple Home for years now that I am still trying to make it work in Apple Home.

Am I the only one with that trouble? Any more suggestions? Help!!

first thing to try right now is to install the new 18.3.2 software update and do the Apple tv if there’s one there for that.

Once you set up things in the hue app. In the settings tab - smart home - Apple Home - Settings - sync to Apple Home will tell it to connect and it syncs everything over so you rarely need to touch the hue app again , if preferred.

I don’t think this will solve all of your problems but it will at least keep the hue bulb settings and automations you set up with it even if the home app is failing to work.

You used to be able to delete the home app and reinstall but now I believe it asks you first to delete the hubs. I don’t want to test it out and delete mine!

Another option to try since the Apple tv is the only hub. You can reset that back to factory settings and set it up again to see if this changes things. Reset the Apple TV app - Apple Support Maybe before you set it back up see if the home app will let you delete it to reinstall home app from App Store? The Apple TV won’t be in the app until you set it back up and sign in .

It sounds like the Homekit settings have somehow become corrupted*. For trouble shooting you can try creating a new Home (best with a different Apple Account/ID), set up a few of the devices and see if the problem remains. If this works then delete the original Home and set it up again with your usual Apple Account/ID.

  • Note that the Homekit settings are effectively shared between all your Apple devices in a local "cloud" so restarting just one device will not fix the corruption. As I understand it, the only way is to delete that Home in the Home app - this removes it from all devices.

To turn off adaptive lighting you must do this per bulb. In the home app tap on the bulb then select the last choice of colour circles, (the one with the rainbow of colours)

Adaptive lighting is made to adjust colour temperatures throughout the day. I don’t personally like that, I set my own in automations in the hue app. It works best with colour ambience bulbs as the white bulbs have no blue in them . After a few years a hue bulb might lose its blue. They basically come with blue, red and green. The blue is the first to go. Or so it seems and this messes everything up. If you’re unsure if your hue bulb has lost its blue just ask Siri to make that bulb blue and if it can’t do it, it’s lost the blue.

and the settings come up to turn it off like this:

I still stand by my original advice to use the hue app. My point is that once you’ve set everything up in that and used the sync to apple home within the hue app, it will force the home app to function better. The home app isn’t as advanced as the hue app as far as fine tuning goes. You can still use the Home App though

I was hoping only one device was doing it to help isolate the problem. You didn’t mention having a HomePod so the assumption is that your Apple TV is the Home Hub. I would restart that as well. Go to settings - System - Restart. If you’re in N America you can always call 1-800-MY-APPLE to ask for assistance with the Home App. They will put an Advisor on the line who might be able to help. It’s safe to allow them remote access to look at your device, if they ask. They likely won’t answer today, try Monday.

The Hue App takes some getting used to. I have quite a few colour ambience bulbs bulbs and two of them lost their blue so I was unable to use my preferred soft purplish tones for evening. I don’t like the dimmed orange yellow look. I put those bulbs in rooms I didn’t care so much about.

Thanks a lot for all that info Vancouver22! I am going to use it all and give it a try to set it up in Hue app, as you suggested for a while. I have no experience with Hue app so it may take some effort to get it done. The blue Hue bulb problem is interesting. I will look if my bulbs have it, which may well be the case. Again... thanks a lot!

The AppleTV is indeed the Home hub and I will restart it too.

The Hue app is indeed not that easy to understand and also my Netatmo camera will not function in the Hue app, I am afraid. Still I am going to look more into Hue app. I am not in N America so the calling wont work. Thanks for the info!

After trying the easy actions without success I finally tried it the hard way: deleted my home / upgraded AppleTV to latest 18.3.1 / upgraded iphones and ipads to latest 18.3.2. Everything seemed disappeared now! Waited some time to give ICloud its time to sync it...... with some trouble initially I managed to connect Hue app(containing all device definitions) to Apple Home again. I had to connect each device individual which took some time, but no complaints or worries!! Reinstalled Scenes and Automations and.... it all seems to operate again without the enoying troubles of before! Heureka!!!

That was more or less the scenario that you suggested of course. Still somewhat afraid trouble will come back later but anyway..... Thanks a lot Vancouver22 and Mpainsyd for your valuable input and patience. I believe God will bless you defenitly sooner or later for this, I hope later of course!!

Still have to connect my Netatmo camera back to Home but I suppose that will work out.

Best regards, Paul (from Belgium)
