iPhone 15 Pro Max Charging Past 80% Limit Occasionally

I am using an iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 18.3.1, and I have enabled the 80% charging limit feature. I am using an original Apple adapter and a braided cable (though Im not entirely sure if its original).

However, i have noticed that sometimes my iPhone charges up to 81% instead of stopping exactly at 80%. This happens occasionally, especially when I leave it plugged in for an hour or two. It doesnt go significantly past 81%, but I am wondering if this is normal behavior or if theres an issue with the charging limit feature.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any insights would be appreciated.

Your battery actually needs to charge to 100% "occasionally" according to Apple, so the battery calibration will be accurate.

Here is what Apple says in their support document:

No one knows exactly what "occasionally" might mean though and Apple will not say. It was 2-3 times a month when I tried Charge Limits, but users are reporting even more and significantly less.

Something is wrong with your battery if it is not charging to 100% "occasionally". Have an authorized Apple service shop check and test the battery.

My opinion......worth only about as much as you had to pay to view this page......Charge Limits are more of a gimmick than anything else, but that might be another discussion. Somehow, Apple got by just fine for 15+ years without them.

But it only goes to 81 I think you may have misunderstood my question. My iPhone is set to the 80% charging limit, and I confirmed this in the Battery settings while charging”it clearly states Charge Limit: 80%. In the Battery section, it also shows Last Charged to 80%. However, despite this, the battery indicator sometimes shows 81%.

My concern is not that the phone is charging to 100%, but rather that it occasionally exceeds 80% by 1%, even though the limit is enabled. Is this expected behavior?

This is normal and expected behavior. Apple notes this in several support articles.

About Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone - Apple Support

The iPhone has to do this so it can calibrate to 100% battery capacity. It’s normal.

If it doesn’t actually know what 80% is, how can it stop the charging when it needs to be stopped?
