Why not??

Because Apple did not include one.

It's clearly an intentional move, either to reduce the cost to build the phone, or to encourage you to buy a regular iPhone 16, or both. As to which of those reasons apply, this is a user-to-user forum and Apple hasn't told any of us "why", and we're not supposed to speculate. If you want to know specific reasons, you will have to ask Apple themselves.

The iPhone 16e has a 2x “optical” zoom setting. This is achieved by taking a crop of the center 12 MP of the 48 MP main camera. You lose 3/4 of the potential resolution, but it is not the ugly kind of digital zoom.

You can simulate a 2x telephoto camera this way, but you cannot simulate a missing 0.5x ultra-wide angle camera because the information it would have captured was never all seen by the main camera in the first place.

How much more would you spend to have a .5X lens? This isn’t brain surgery. Feature after feature can be added. That’s an upside, so what’s the downside? The cost goes up for each feature you add.

If you want an iPhone with a .5X lens, you’re in luck, Apple makes one. It’s called iPhone 16, offers additional features, but costs more. It costs more because of the additional features.
