Epson ET-4850 scanner not communicating with iMac: Error 4294957394 (-9902)

Printer/scanner not finding computer.

Computer message appears as "(com.apple.imagecapture error 4294957394.) (-9902)".

Printer message is "Install the ScanSmart software on the computer to use this feature".

All printer software is up to date. The printer is connected to the same wifi as the computer. I have restarted both to no avail and redownloaded Epson software just in case. Nothing has helped.

The 4850 is connected to the same wifi as the computer, as indicated in my original note. The printer/computer connection works. The scanner/computer connection is the problem.

I went into the Epson User Manual and was able to scan my document using Epson ScanSmart. Then why can't I scan from my Mac's System Settings for Printers & Scanners?

Hmm... I've been using Image Capture with Epson's for a very long time and never had a problem.

Try starting up your Mac in Safe Mode, followed by a normal restart and then test Image Capture.

Do you get this error after downloading/installing the Epson Et-4850 printer (10/24) and scanner (09/23) drivers for macOS Sequoia v15 and Resetting the Print system?

This device is supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint (when networked) for printing and scanning without needing Epson drivers for either function. Apple's Image Capture would be the scanning utility with AirPrint. The optional, paid VueScan Professional scanning software also supports this device without any Epson drivers and could be used with AirPrint instead of Apple's Image Capture.

Regarding you reset suggestion, I assume control-click to reset means control-return. This did not give me a reset option.

I have had this printer/scanner since 10/24. It has worked perfectly until this morning. I have macOS Sequoia 15/3/1.

Even the last ET-4850 scanner driver for this device dates back a year (2023) before Sequoia 15 was released and it may be that Epson needs to release a newer scanner driver for Sequoia compatibility. Consider contacting Epson about this issue and that error code.

If you launch Apple's Image Capture, does it see the ET-4850 scanner? If you download the free trial of VueScan Professional, does it detect the scanner?

Some vendor's devices work with Image Capture without so-called ICA drivers for that purpose and others require a specific Epson scanner driver. As in the ET-4850 case, the Epson scanner driver has not been updated for a year before macOS Sequoia was released, and there can be a compatibility issue with that older Epson scanner driver now. Contact Epson.

Did you at least download and try the free trial of VueScan Professional with your scanner?
