HomePod unusable, continually cuts out when playing music.

So does the HomePod have to be connected through Apple Music and the home app only? I don't use those apps. I use Spotify and NTS radio. I connect through airplay and it just cuts out randomly or when I use my phone that I am playing from. Generally it's a couple of songs in and will cut off. Even when I check an iMessage, it will just stop playing. Then I have to connect it again through airplay. The wifi signal is fine as every other device can connect without issue. I do have both 2.4 and 5Ghtz signals from my router, but do not know how to select one as default on the HomePod, was thinking 2.4 may be more stable. Any help would be appreciated, especially if you have had the same problem. Thanks.
