AppleCare for iPhone upgrade

Want to change from iPhone SE to iPhone 16. Could I keep current Apple Care plan or extend it to the new phone after I buy it?

My current plan ends in May 2025

iPhone SE, iOS 18

AppleCare+ is tied to the specific device, not the owner. Once you purchase AppleCare+ for an iPhone (or any Apple device), it’s registered to that device’s unique serial number or IMEI.

That means:

  • It can’t be transferred to another iPhone, even if you’re the owner of both devices.
  • If you sell or give away your iPhone, the AppleCare+ coverage stays with the device, and the new owner can benefit from it.

The only exception is if you cancel AppleCare+ — you could get a prorated refund based on the remaining coverage. But you’d need to purchase a new AppleCare+ for a different device.
