Trackpad battery does not show in widget

With my new iMac (8months) my old trackpad (2013) with batteries does not show up in the battery widget.

It does show INTERMITTENTLY in the menu icon.

It always appeared on my old machine in the battery widget.

SO my old trackpad does have the capability to transmit battery state - it used to show and now appears occasionally in the menu - but Sonoma appears to ignore it. I'm not interested in the keyboard state, it's permanently connected.
