My original database system is a great application, but to keep using it now I will need to pay a lot of money, thanks to its "improvements". I can't use any of the improvements, and I'm not interested in paying for them. Any recommendations for lower-cost, or free, and simpler database apps will be helpful.

Might want to provide some of your requirements, as there are lots of options for databases.
Assuming macOS…
SQLite is built in, and various front-ends are available, and SQL is SQL (more or less).
PostgreSQL is another available option.
I was quite fond of the now-deprecated Bento, and that too has alternatives, and alternatives. In various ways, Filemaker is not a particularly good alternative to Bento, either.
