iMac struggling to connect to Wi-Fi modem,

Hi, I have a new imac 2023 model, I think, bought last year 2024. I have a data mast at home with EE. Yesterday and today I was connected to wifi, but couldn’t download a page from the internet and iMac said no connection. Looked at setting etc, also turned wifi off and on, then told it forget network and left it over night. I am also concerned that automatic updates, are not updating? I have tried 3 times to update security for Somona ( if that’s the right spelling) I was a bit shocked that after I’d paid £2k for this computer that it immediately told me to upgrade to a different operating system ( can’t remember what it’s called, but I haven’t done that, as need to download the security update. So currently I have downloaded a third of it and basically looks like it doesn’t want to. Apart from that my question is, I looked through server setting and found this ( not seen before, on my old iMac of 2008) a connection to .. BOIS or something like that., it said ´Work’I turned it off thinking I have never set this and the only thing I thought afterwards was my HP printer, as it’s on Hp instant ink, tracking your usage etc. Scarcely HP then tell you not to leave any paper in the scanner, as others can see it? I’ve tried to look this up, but so many different questions and not accurate information. What do others think? I try not to allow screen sharing and thought some BT problem ( chap gave me a code) but on my iPhone. But then whatever you do iPhone is picked up and I downloaded WhatsApp onto my computer and imessenger the other day, is it them? I am so suspicious of anything, it’s a nightmare. Any help appreciated thanks louisa

WiFi not staying connected, or will not connect:

Try changing your router from WPA2/WPA3 to just WPA2.

Try disabling IPv6: System Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Details -> TCP/IP (tab) -> Configure IPv6 -> Link-Local Only

Try disabling Private WiFi addresses?

https://support.apple.com/en-us/102509

System Settings -> Wi-FI -> Advanced -> Known Networks (remote old entries).

Make sure you have a secure and fairly long WiFi password.

Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/102766

Delete all your network settings (you have to manually restore)

o Menu bar -> WiFi icon -> Toggle WiFi “Off”

o Finder -> Go (menu) -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Preferences/System Configuration

o Delete the following files:

- com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

- com.apple.network.identification.plist

- com.apple.network.eapolclient.configuration.plist

- com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist

- NetworkInterfaces.plist

- preferences.plist

o Turn WiFi back on (Menu bar -> WiFi icon -> Toggle WiFi “On”)

Poorly shielded USB3 devices, cables, or connectors can cause WiFi interference (especially using an old USB2 cable with a USB3 device). As an experiment, disconnect all USB3 devices.

Some cordless phones and baby monitors (yours or a neighbor that is close to your home) sometimes use the 2.4GHz frequencies, and can cause interference.

Interference from Neighbor’s WiFi is using the same channels as you.

Finder -> Go (menu) -> Go to folder -> /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications

Launch “Wireless Diagnostics”

Wireless Diagnostics -> Window -> Scan

Find your home WiFi

Check that Noise is a high negative value (-90 is low interference; -30 is high interference)

Check RSSI has low negative values (-34 is fantastic; -50’s is still good; -70’s not so much).

Check your neighbors channels are not overlapping you or have weak RSSI
