Lots of beginner issues with iMovie 10.3.1 mac.

I started with a 2 hour video from which I tried to remove 2 sections. Each several minutes long. (When I drag the remaining sections the "removed" sections still seem to be there.)

I tried to join the remaining sections, but I only see a greyed out "Join Clips", which probably means that the remaining sections are not clips.

When I try to Share to File, nothing seems to happen. I see 4 separate files of various sizes appearing in the Finder. The file that seems to be the movie has a QuickTime Player icon, but keeps saying "Zero bytes". In the top right hand corner of the screen I see a pie chart like icon that seems to be filling up, but the file sizes in the Finder do not change.

I have now spent several hours trying various Google searched all to no effect. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The way to remove a segment is to do a Modify/Split Clip at the beginning point of the segment that you want to remove, and then trim back (drag the left edge to the right) the segment to be eliminated until you have eliminated the part that you want. Or, you can do a Modify/Split clip at the in point and out points, and then select the segment in between thus created and press Delete on your keyboard.

You cannot rejoin the remaining segments with the Join Clips command after you have trimmed out or removed a segment. You can only rejoin a split clip with the Join Clips command if there have been no edits done to either segment. The way to rejoin segments that have been trimmed or edited is to Copy/Paste them into a newly created project and export them out to a movie on your desktop (or elsewhere). That will join all the clips together.

Regarding the "zero bytes" issue, during an export iMovie places temporary files on the desktop to aid it in rendering the final exported movie. These files cannot be opened and will show zero bytes. When the export is completed the temporary files will disappear and the final Mp4 file will appear on the desktop and can be opened and played. In your situration, you only need to wait until the export is fully completed. It may take awhile because you are working with a 2 hour video.
