How do I unlock an iPhone 16 Pro locked to owner?

Hi,

My Iphone 16 pro has been stolen about 3 months back. We recovered the phone a few days later, the guy who stole the phone ereased everything and now the phone says locked to owner. I store said theres nothing that can be done. I also called Apple they said the same, I do not understand this.

Is there anybody that can be of assistance please, its frustrating to pay for something that can not be used.

I am the owner of the phone and did sent the relevant documents to Apple to prove that the phone belongs to me.

However no feed back from Apple as yet.

Like said previously the phone was stolen and recovered from an unknown source. So I do not have the details of the person who stole the phone. He deleted everything and entered his details, so now I sit with a phone which can not be used and still have to pay the monthly installments.

I really thought Apple would have better support in cases like this. Its rather disappointing.

Apple ID and Activation Lock

iCloud uses Apple ID credentials.

If you do not remember the Apple ID Password then follow the steps given in this Apple Article -> If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support

If you are the owner or the owner has shared all information with you then to open Activation Lock:- If it is Activation locked, read here --> Turn off Activation Lock - Apple Support Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Learn how to remove a device from a previous owner's account.

If you are not the owner and do not have the Apple ID and Password then there is no way that you can get into this iPhone unless the original owner shares the Apple ID and password with you. If you are lucky you can get into this iPhone if they (owner) accidentally remove the device from their Apple ID.
