How do I fix Face ID issue on my iPhone 13 Pro Max?

This does not make any sense to me. I have a promax 13. When I am around one person and only this one person, my phone locks so that my face does not unlock the phone and I must use the pin. Additionally, the phone then thinks it is in a different state for many hours. How/why does this happen? Thanks.
