If you are asking about AppleCare coverage, that would have covered the costs of repair, except for a small deductible like $20 or so.
If you have other insurance, you will need to file a claim with the insurance company and provide them with all of the documentation that they require.

We don't have all the facts here, or even most of them, but the shop should have told you up front that repairs would not be covered under the AppleCare plan.
The reason might have been that accidental damage is not covered by AppleCare.
If you feel that you have a case, ask to talk to the service manager.
