Can't restore internal hard drive

i use Mac OS El capitan on an about 14 year old macbook pro, and it hasn't been able to boot up since the hard drive reached full space of 1 TB. Ive been trying to restore it on a brand new WD My Passport external HDD of 2 TB and have had no luck, consistently prompted with the hard drive not having enough space to transfer (which i find incredibly hard to believe) please help!!

After Ventura 13.1 was installed, I had to backup Document directories from the cloud and reinstall the major apps (Microsoft 365, Adobe readers, Evernote, Whatsapp and Signal for the desktop, Google and Dropbox for the desktop, VLC player.) Please advise...I am so nervous about the space problem, I have not yet reinstalled the printer drivers. Ram

new external hard drive does not automatically work for back up. I had external hard drive for back up. It said there's not enough space that I purchased a new one. It is for Mac. But it does not automatically back up. Mac still recognize the old one. I can select the disk, but it asks me if it can erase "My Passport for Mac" so it can be used for Time machine, which I think fine to do so, since nothing is in this hard drive yet. However, it also shows "Erasing will destroy all information on "my Passport for Mac" and can't be undone. Also, "The volume must be erased because it contains existing data", which this new external hard drive must have. I am not sure if I can go ahead and erase all in the new external hard drive. I don't know if this a format thing. Since this is new external hard drive, I do not want to mess it up. Can anyone let me know how to do the back when you change the external hard drive?

Deleting files from RecoveryOS after MacOS Ventura failed to install I just tried to install macOS Ventura on my 2019 MacBook Pro 16-inch and then, upon booting it, it took me straight to RecoveryOS. I told me there was an error installing the new macOS Ventura. What I tried: Now, I first tried to restore from Time Machine, but the backup wont show up, and the drive I had backed up on is currently broken and every business i’ve taken it to says they cant fix it, so that option is out the window. I then tried to Reinstall macOS Ventura, but apparently I don’t have enough storage (I had 50 GB free before installing macOS Ventura for the first time. I think this is my best option, but I cant figure out how to delete files to free up storage. I’d really appreciate any help I can get since my life is on that computer… Thanks.

What is the exact model Macbook Pro that you have? At a minimum, what year?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?
